Why I Chose Slow Luxury Over Fast Fashion

"This is the story behind the collection. It is why I chose to create fewer, more meaningful pieces instead of following traditional fashion cycles. I have been dreaming of making this collection since I was a child."

There is a dress hanging in my memory. I designed it at seventeen, before I knew the word "drape," before I had a studio, before I understood what slow fashion meant. All I knew was that I wanted to feel something when I put it on. I wanted to feel free.

That dress was my prom gown, and I designed it myself. Not because I had to, but because nothing I found felt like me. The silhouettes felt borrowed. The fabrics felt forgettable. So I sat down with a sketch pad and made something that was entirely mine. When I wore it, I understood something I've carried with me ever since: clothing is one of the most intimate forms of self-expression we have. It deserves to be treated that way.

"I didn't want to design trends. I wanted to design moments, pieces that a woman would keep for years, then pass down."

The problem with fashion as we know it

Most of what we're sold today is made to be replaced. Fast, cheap, and disposable,  designed with a shelf life measured in months, not decades. The environmental cost is staggering, and the personal cost is just as real: we fill our wardrobes with things that don't move us, don't fit properly, and are gone from stores before we've worn them twice.

I've spent years traveling, drawing inspiration from the colors of coastal landscapes, the drape of traditional textiles in markets I wandered through, the way a woman in a silk sari moves through a room with effortless confidence. What I found everywhere I went was the same quiet truth: the pieces women treasured most were never the trendy ones. They were the ones that felt like them.

What slow luxury actually means

When I began building Designs by Natalie Maharaj, a slow fashion brand, I made myself one promise: I would never make more than I believed in. Each style in this first collection will be produced in limited quantities. That's not a marketing strategy, it's a commitment. A commitment to quality over quantity. To the woman who invests in her wardrobe the way she invests in the rest of her life: with care, with intention, and with an eye toward what lasts.

I source vintage silk and repurpose Indian sarees, textiles with history, with texture, with soul. I work with fabrics that move. That breathe. That feel extraordinary against your skin. These are not pieces you'll see on a hundred other women. They're not meant to be.

"Each piece is designed to live with you. Worn to a gallery opening, a dinner in a foreign city, a wedding, or a slow afternoon somewhere beautiful."

For the woman who moves with intention

I designed this collection for a woman I know well, because in many ways, she is me. She loves art and theater. She travels with a small, considered wardrobe. She has no interest in keeping up with what's "in" because she has already found what is hers. She buys less, but she chooses beautifully.

She also cares about where things come from. She thinks about the hands that made her clothes, the footprint they leave, the story they carry. When she wears something, she wants it to mean something.

This is just the beginning

The first collection is made up of a few silhouettes, crafted in small numbers. These will be available for pre-order soon. A vintage silk kaftan inspired dress. A versatile cowl dress. A butterfly-inspired gown. A classic, elegant slip. All of these not only empowering but allowing that feeling of being free.

I am so grateful you're here at the beginning. This collection is everything I've been quietly working toward, since that sketch pad, since that prom dress, since the first time I understood that what we wear is one of the most personal things we'll ever choose.

Thank you for believing in something made slowly, made beautifully, and made to last.
